On the Horror genre

This is a conversation I often have with my friends when they ask me if I want to go see a horror movie.

What happens when we, as a society, become tired of watching actors faking death, and start demanding to see real deaths?

It makes me think about the ancient Romans’ love of violence, as shown by munera, gladiatorial battles held in the Colosseum. American society is often compared to the ancient Roman society, in areas including our political and educational systems, as well as our military might.

Some might say that this would be against basic human decency, that we as humans would never allow ourselves to sink this low.

I would argue that we as humans are not basically decent.

I feel that the term “basic decency” implies that at our very base, we treat each other decently.

But in so many instances, when become desperate to fulfill our basic needs, we become barbarous.

As a Calvinist, I definitely believe in humanity’s total depravity, and I think that it is well illustrated by this fact.

So, one day, will we be able to turn on our televisions and watch a channel where murderers, or terrorists, or those against a pluralistic society, killed for entertainment 24 hours a day?

We’ll see. I don’t think that we’re getting better… so what could be worse?

On Friendship

I often take for granted that no matter how long you haven’t talked to your best friend, it’s always a blessing to spend time with them when they get the chance.

Too often, I think about time in the sense of an hourglass: constantly running out. I need to seize the memories we share and pour into his life and serve him as much as I can, before I can’t anymore.

Stop thinking about the future, don’t live in the past. “No day but today.”

I know that’s become somewhat cliche due to the musical RENT’s popularity, but I think that it holds some Biblical truth.

Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Maybe thinking about it in the sense of a musical is corny, but it’s kind of applicable.

All we have is today.

It’s pretty much for my thoughts and rants and philosophical wonderings about things.

You don’t have to read it, but I’d like for there to be some discourse about certain topics.
